IN THIS LESSON
What are Values?
A value is a principle that you hold to be important in your life and living a life that is fully aligned with your values makes you more of who you want to be. Values help you figure out who you are and what you stand for. Living in alignment with values will help you grow and create the life that you most want to create. Values can be used as a filter to make sure your daily decisions are aligned with what you value. When you have values in place, they will serve as your guiding light.
Deciding what you value is important in your relationships, your business, and your own life.
This week, we will identify and understand our values and be deliberate in how we apply them in our life.
Here is an incomplete list. Take a look and notice the Values that are most important to you. Write them down.
Defining Your Values Matters.
It is important to take the time to decide for yourself what your values are. What are your values as a person?
Have you ever taken the time to intentionally define what is valuable and important and acceptable in your world? If you haven’t, that’s okay, but now is a beautiful opportunity to establish what those values are.
Defining your values doesn't have to involve researching or reading up to ensure you are choosing the "right" values. Just sit down and write down the things that you truly value. It could be very private. You don’t have to share this with anyone. If you value some things that you don’t necessarily want to be public, you don’t need them to be. You will see your life reflected in your values if you do this correctly.
Be very careful to say to yourself as you go through your list of values, “Is this something I think I should value, or is this something I actually value?” There is no right or wrong answer.
Question from curiosity and nonjudgement. You can decide what your values are.
Where Your Values Lead You.
I want to encourage you to fast forward your life and think about what kind of life you will create for yourself if you live it in alignment with your values. What type of person will you be if this is what you most value? How do you see yourself showing up in your career? Your relationships? Your personal life?
What is the thing that you most value in your life? And are you living in alignment with this?
Look at your life and identify if you have any areas where you have conflicting values.
Notice if it feels like you are living your life in a way that aligns with your values.
Prompts to Help Define Your Values:
Answer the following questions in your journal. Doing so can help you become clear about your values.
What have been the biggest highlights and the biggest lowlights of your life? During the highlights of your life, you will probably find that you were living according to your values. During the lowlights, you may discover that you were not living in alignment with what is most important to you.
Who do you admire and what values do they embody? Often, the people that we look up to the most embody our core values.
Think about about your big dream. What values do you need to practice every single day to get you there? Very often, our dream is buried in our values. Who do you need to become to reach this dream? What values does you need to expand upon and start living into?
