Task and Calendar Mastering is Not Living

Hi friend! By now you have clearly defined your values, meaningful pursuit, and mission statement.

You've revisited what you want in life and you have identified how you want to feel as you experience your life.

You may find as you try to make some shifts and changes,, you get off track. You might find yourself having the very best intentions - to put yourself first, to create what you want, to make your desired changes - but then find yourself back in overwhelm and busyness, simply responding and trying to keep up on your day to day.

So many women zero in on what they want and then fall off track. WHY?

We are conditioned to think that time management is the most important thing we can do to get ahead. We believe that if we manage our time better, we will feel better. We have been programmed to focus on getting things done. We are taught that this will make us successful. This will be how we find peace.

We get very good at staying on top of things, scheduling, multitasking, and keeping the household running smoothly.

However, we soon find ourselves spending time ticking off tasks that bring us zero joy and have nothing to do with how we want to feel.

It is Possible to Feel Amazing

I want you to know that it is possible to feel the things that you want to feel. You CAN feel fulfilled and excited about your life and future. You can have a career and personal life that you love. You can feel amazing in mind, body, and soul. You can cultivate and have meaningful relationships.

Often when clients start working with me, they are so depleted, emotionally exhausted, and overwhelmed, that they don't see how to move forward. They aren't sure what they can take off their list. They have full, busy lives and it seems impossible to simplify. Many are numbing out, and are avoiding parts of their lives by keeping a very full schedule. Focusing on living an aligned life is crucial, and we do this by taking note of how we are managing our energy.

Managing Energy to Live an Aligned Life

Time management is one part of the story. However, if you fail to carefully and thoughtful manage your emotional energy, you'll have a difficult time living a fulfilling and burnout-free life

Your brain uses more energy than any other organ. The way you invest your mental energy will play a major role in whether or not you feel energized or drained. In fact, psychologists have identified emotional exhaustion as a key factor in professional burnout. And in my experience, exerting the majority of your emotional energy and time on things and people that drain you and do not inspire or excite you, is certainly a major factor at play when you are living a life that feels out of alignment.

The Nervous System can Become Overloaded

You may have heard of cognitive or sensory overload. Your senses relay information form your environment to your brain, which is turn interprets the information and tells you how to respond. If your brain begins to get overloaded with all of the information it is receiving, your nervous system will become activated and go into overdrive. Eventually, this results in fatigue and low physical and emotional energy.

Energy management is about become the boss of what you are taking in through your senses. Who and what are you surrounding yourself with? What is your environment like? Who and what are you allowing to influence you? If many things in your life are draining you, it's time to focus on energetic management.

Exercise: Energy Audit

For the next week, I would like you complete an energy audit.

Use the simple log in the document below.

For a week, track all of the activities you are engaged in. Make sure to note who you are with, what you're doing, where you are, and how you feel. Rate each event on a scale from zero (completely drained) to ten (energized and alive).

Following the completion of this exercise, you will have lots of valuable information that you can use to decide where to focus your energy moving forward.
